Welcome to the Harris-Sutton House at 8 Water Street.  We're very pleased to have you visit our home and hope that you will love it, and Ipswich, as much as we do.  
 
We purchased this house in late 2006.  Although it was in a state of extreme disrepair, we were attracted to its beautiful location on the river.  And, having spent many summers out on Little Neck, we also wanted an in-town location for both the convenience and the feeling of connection to the Ipswich community.
 
When we bought it, the house was rotting, with a barely functioning kitchen and bathrooms, an unusable dirt half-basement, and no garage.  Many of the original features were missing or hidden.  We wanted to make it comfortable, with all the modern amenities and energy efficiencies, but we also knew how important it was to preserve its historical features.  We were very fortunate to meet the late Jim Whidden, a master craftsman who spent two and a half years painstakingly restoring its beauty.  It was a true partnership and a labor of love for us all.
 
We love our home.  It is steeped in history, but doesn't feel like a museum.  The large, bright rooms make it easy to entertain a crowd.  The kitchen is a joy to use, and everyone seems to congregate there.  The house is a wonderful place to celebrate holidays, especially Thanksgiving - eating the meal by the huge hearth in the 17th century dining room, then enjoying a walk along the river in the same places where Native Americans lived when the early settlers arrived.
 
It is impossible for us to describe our home without also including the river.  On Water Street, there is an inherent connection to the river:  the daily rhythm of the tides; gulls, swans and cormorants; clammers delivering their hauls to sell at the Town Wharf; little boys running down Summer Street with fishing poles.  The river is peaceful and ever-changing.  We can slide our kayaks into the water and quietly paddle out to Treadwell Island.  But it takes just ten minutes by powerboat to Ipswich Bay, then out to Crane Beach, Plum Island, or the open ocean.  
 
Living in town has helped us create ties to the Ipswich community.  Water Street is a favorite walking route and we've met many people who have stopped to chat.  The parade passes by on the 4th of July, as well as Santa after he arrives by boat at Town Wharf in December.  It is just a short walk to town hall, the library, and to downtown, where we enjoy the restaurants, galleries and shops.  And when we want to go to Boston, we can easily walk to the train station and take the commuter rail into the city.
 
Ipswich is a very special place.  It has a spectacular beach, beautiful farms, walking trails, a downtown, a vibrant arts community and a diverse population.  Now that we have both retired, we're moving to live closer to family, but we will miss Ipswich enormously and will remember our time here as the best years of our lives.
